Should be Thankful

Posted at 12:00 pm under My Thoughts

Ace’ high school batchmate arrived from Cebu yesterday. After dinner we went to downtown to meet one of their batchmates. Proud of the new park in the city, we brought our visitor to People’s Park. The park only opened December of last year and is a project of the city government. It has nice landscape with different kinds of plants and trees, brick walkways, numerous art pieces, fun park for the kids, nice structures with amphitheater-like grounds. There’s no one like it in Cebu. Anyways, we enjoyed strolling, sight seeing and of course, eating our favorite chips while updating each other the whereabouts of their other batchmates. Though it’s already past 9 in the evening, many people are still in the park…students, lovers, families, professionals. After a while, the rain started and we ran to the nearest structure and waited for the rain to stop. For the past weeks, it’s been raining so hard here…literally, when it rains it really pours and here comes the city’s problem, flood in some of the streets and the park’s location is not an exception. Outside, we hardly crossed the road due to the flood but there’s still not so flooded portion. Anyhow, a group of men passed by us commenting “Is this the 78 million-peso park? Without a bridge here?” I reacted and said to myself, ”Hello! Are you sane? Why would they put a bridge here when there’s no river or any body of water?” Maybe what they mean is to fill part of the road which is more lower than the rest so that it will not be flooded. I really don’t know how much the gov’t spent to develop the park and I am not interested to know ‘coz it’s worth the price I guess. For sure, the expenses not only cover the tangible things seen in the park but also the labor cost, the logistics and everything. Imagine how many people worked hard for it. It’s sad to know that despite of the city government’s effort to give service to the people, some are still discontented. Instead of being thankful that after so long, there’s a nice and condusive place free for all people to enjoy. In fairness to the city government, they have done another worthwhile project for all Davaoeños and also to people from other places.

It does sound like a great park! We don’t have one like that here… But we live in a somewhat small town (not quite 7000 people).
