Holy First Communion

I am not a Roman Catholic so I have no idea what they do during the first communion. I just heard about it from others especially when parents I know receive the First Communion Invitations for their son or daughter.

First communion must be a special event in the life of a Roman Catholic child so parents make sure that they attend this event. Or are they required to attend the said activity of their kid/s? I am not really sure! For the Catholic schools, they send out communion invitation to the parents.
